ACTIVITY REPORT OF THE YOUNG JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION OF THE GAMBIA (YJAG) FOR THE PERIOD OCTOBER 2011 – SEPTEMBER 2013

The Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG) is an independent non-profit making organization.  The association was formed by a group of young journalist with foresight and vision who thought it wise to come together to promote mutual understanding and the general wellbeing of young journalists in the country.  The association is legally registered with the Attorney General’s Chamber on 16^th September, 2007. 

BREAKING NEWS: YJAG ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE

The Young Journalists Association of The Gambia, YJAG, on Saturday elected a new Executive Committee to run the affairs of the association until 2016.

Various positions were elected unopposed. Nfamara Jawneh, a founding president of YJAG, was elected unopposed as the new YJAG President. Jawneh's intention to run for presidency following his nomination - show the withdrawal of Bekai Njie, the outgoing YJAG 1st Vice President. Mr Jawneh, a Deputy Editor of The Point was President of YJAG from 2007-2009. 

Nyima Jadama, former Public Relations Officer, PRO, of YJAG is elected 1st Vice President. She works at Star FM radio, Ms Amie Faye of News & Report Magazine is elected 2nd Vice President, The Voice Newspaper's Sulayman Ceesay, a former Treasurer of YJAG is now the new Secretary General.

The Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG) is deeply concerned over the safety and security of our colleague, member and former President Assan Sallah, also a News Editor at the Daily Observer Newspaper.

Mr Sallah reportedly went missing since Wednesday, June 26, 2013. His whereabouts is not known, according to his colleagues at work, who told YJAG that Mr Sallah last reported for work last Wednesday.

Family sources have also told YJAG that they have not heard from Mr. Sallah and could not reach him on phone since last week.

PRESS RELEASE: YJAG fundraising dancehall show with DJ Pisces successful

The fundraising musical show of the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG) with DJ Pisces on 27 April at Romana in Bakau was a successful one.

The people of Bakau and the environs came en-mass to patronize and support the young media practitioners.

Nyima Jadama, the public relations officer of the association, thanked all those who came out to patronise the association in its quest to raise fund to be able to implement some of its impending programmes.

Ms Jadama also thanked DJ Pisces and his One Force Alliance for helping the young journalists to raise fund. 

YJAG to hold mega fundraising dancehall show with DJ Pisces

The Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG) is to hold a mega dancehall musical show with one of the most renowned DJs in the country, DJ Pisces on 27 April 2013 at Romana in Bakau. 

The fundraising is meant to gather more funds for the association to embark on more capacity building programmes for its members, the young journalists, for them to become responsible journalists in order to contribute their quota to national development of The Gambia.

Lamin Jahateh, secretary general of YJAG, reiterated that proceeds from the programme will also be used to implement a line-up of activities which the association is to hold but could not due to the perennial problem of lack of fund.

YJAG, DJ PISCES FUNDRAISER: ROMANA, BAKAU 27 APRIL, 2013

The General Membership is urged to attend and pay the admission fee. Funds gathered will be used to finance training programmes.

UPDATE: CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS

Applications for UK Chevening Scholarships – deadline extended 

The deadline for Gambian applications for UK Chevening Scholarships, the prestigious global scholarship programme run by the UK Government has recently been extended.  

Every year the British High Commission to The Gambia sends two Gambian students to the UK for a fully funded one year masters degree programme at a university of their choice.  (There are currently two Gambian students in the UK studying advanced economics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.)

The deadline has just been extended to 02^nd January 2013 meaning potential students now have more time to apply.  Students must pass an English Language Test before they will be awarded a scholarship.

4 YJAG Members attends media freedom and responsibility training in Ghana

Four YJAG members on September 16 left Banjul for Accra, Ghana, to attend a two-week intensive course on “Freedom and Responsibility in the Media.”

They are Lamin Jahateh, YJAG Secretary General and an editor at the MarketPlace Business Newspaper, Yussuf Ceesy, Co-opted members of YJAG executive and a reported for The Point newspaper, Binta Bah,a judicial correspondent for The Daily News Newspaper, and Amie Faye, a reporter for the Gambia News & Report Magazine.

YJAG TO MARK 5TH ANNIVERSARY: SEPTEMBER 16

On 16^th September this year, the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia will be five years old and as such the association is to hold a day-long symposium on the day at the new secretariat of the Gambia Press Union, in Fajara, to mark the anniversary.

A news release from the association has it that the theme of this year’s anniversary is: “Promoting Professionalism Through Capacity Building”, and a number of lectures in line with theme are to be delivered on the day by veteran journalists in the country.

The Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG) has recently inaugurated a new board of advisers that is to provide strategic guidance and a thoughtful advice for the association to help ensure that it remains true to its aims, mission and vision.

Held on 19^th July at the new secretariat of the Gambia Press Union in Fajara, the ceremony was graced by various media chiefs in the country, the executive director of the GPU, and a cross section of media practitioners.

The new executive members of the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG), last Tuesday began courtesy calls on media chiefs in the country. The aim of their visit is to solicit the support of the media chiefs in empowering young journalists in the media fraternity.
